Stick to Local Food! campaign – support local farmers

This isn’t exactly education related but I am posting it anyways. I grew up on a farm in Michigan so farms and farmers have always had a special place in my heart.

I just heard of this campaign today and think it would be such a fun thing to do with kids over the summer – visit various farms around the area and collect the stickers. However contributions are still needed to make the Stick to Local Food! program happen. Check it out and see if you might like to support local farmers in this way.

Summer Camps and Activities in the Kingston area UPDATED 5/22/14

Summer is just around the corner and the kids will be out of school.  Do you have plans for your kids?  Will they hang out at home and just relax all summer or do you prefer to keep them occupied with activities?  Does your work schedule require that they attend camps in the summer?

Let’s share ideas about various activities, camps, etc. for our kids.  I have received some information from various organizations and I am sure that many of you have camps/activities that your kids have loved that you can share.  Please post camp/event names, descriptions, links, why your kids loved a particular camp/activity/etc. in the comments.

Personal recommendations from the Safron family:

  • Summer Strings – a day camp for those who love to play violin, viola, cello or bass and want to study classical string orchestra and traditional fiddle music while having a ton of fun!  What the kids learned in five days was unbelievable as demonstrated by the amazing concerts performed at the end of the camp week.
  • Wayfinder Experience – day camps and overnight camps including acting (improv), sports, fantasy, making new friends and the outdoors that are way better than video games!  You will have to read about it to truly understand the Wayfinder Experience but suffice it to say everyone is made to feel a part and everyone leaves changed.  The kids can’t wait to return the next year.
  • Rec Rats (at the Hurley Rec) – the Hurley Recreation Association is a local recreational facility offering members access to a pool, playground, pavilions, baseball field, tennis courts/lessons and an ice skating rink in the winter.  The Hurley Rec is accepting new members.  A new Rec Rats summer camp program is being offered for members ages 5 and up.  The new Rec Rats program has some nice sounding enhancements but since it is new, I can’t give personal experience on what will be offered this year.  My kids did enjoy the times they participated in years past.
  • Children’s Swimming Lessons/Children’s Tennis Lessons (at the Hurley Rec) - the Hurley Recreation Association offers swimming lessons and tennis lessons for members and non-members.  Check out the link for prices and schedules.  We have always found the lessons to be a great value for the money.

I just discovered the Kingston Happenings website and it indicates that City of Kingston Summer Program Registration has begun (as of 5/6/14).
