I have posted many times about state testing and the problems associated with it and will continue to do so throughout the coming school year. This letter from Ira Shor was posted on Diane Ravitch’s blog and captures very well, in my opinion, why parents should REFUSE the state tests.
We parents can stop the destruction of our public schools. We can stop the looting of school budgets by private charters and testing vendors. We can stop the abuse of our children by the relentless hours of testing. We can stop the closings, the co-locations, the mass firings, the replacement of veteran teachers with short-term TFA newbies, the shameful indignity of public schools told they have 24 hours to clear out so a charter can seize their classrooms. To do this, we have to opt-out our kids from the new testing regimes—refuse to let the schools test our kids with PARCC or Smarter Balanced, boycott the pointless and punitive tests which make the best years of our kids’ lives into a digital hell.

I was honored to speak regarding High-Stakes Testing as part of a bi-partisan, grassroots Education Conversation in Schenectady, New York on Saturday July 12, 2014) – video here.
Other presenters spoke about the history of Common Core and how it is manipulating our children/teachers/schools, how parents and mothers in particular are advocating for their children, the social-emotional impact of Common Core on children, special education, charter schools, annual professional performance review (APPR) and the cost of Common Core. Here is a link to the video playlist from the forum – Education Conversation video playlist. Candidate for governor Rob Astorino also spoke about his stand against Common Core – video here.
Strange things happen when Governor Cuomo makes things bad enough. I say ‘Hooray’ to Rob Astorino and Zephyr Teachout!
Astorino and Teachout hold joint press conference on corruption
And just in case you are not familiar with who Rob Astorino and Zephyr Teachout are – Rob Astorino is the Republican candidate running for governor and Zephyr Teachout has gathered enough signatures for a Democratic primary to be held between her and Andrew Cuomo in September. Their press conference was not education-related but both candidates are opposed to Common Core!
I am still working on collecting signatures for the StopCommonCore line on the November ballot. Contact me if you would like to help collect signatures or just put your John Hancock on my petition.
I am committed to doing whatever I can to bring about change in Albany in November (as long as it is legal and ethical) and I would very much like to see a Democratic Primary between Zephyr Teachout and Andrew Cuomo take place.
If you are a registered Democrat who is concerned about Common Core and how it is affecting the children of New York, please participate in collecting petitions so that Zephyr can participate in the primary. The Primary Petitions must be returned by July 5, 2014.
If we want to expand the conversation on education, by putting up a challenge to Cuomo, there is nothing more helpful than Zephyr’s decision to run. A signature for Zehpyr Teachout to primary doesn’t mean that you will vote for her, just that you want to see the conversation about what is possible take place in the political domain. In order to collect signatures you must be a registered Democrat and you should witness signatures of only registered Democrats. All of the forms are available on her site here .
I am dreaming of an election in November where the children do not have to be a factor in the election because Common Core is not at stake (both Zephyr and Rob Astorino seem to be opposed to Common Core and are promising to get rid of it if elected). Then the election could be focused on other issues important to the voters in New York not how can we protect our children! Check out Zephyr’s stand on a variety of issues here and Rob’s here .
I met Yvonne Gasperino online just as “Stop Common Core in New York State” was getting started – can’t remember if it was March or April 2013. She helped me with the first baby steps of understanding the big picture of Common Core and the impact it is having on our children; the problems with not just the Common Core State Standards but the testing, the teacher appraisal system, the data collection, the loss of local control of education.
Yvonne has continued to be right there, online at all hours and traveling around the state, helping me and so many others throughout New York State as we have become ‘Warrior Moms’, moms who would have preferred to just be moms but have felt compelled to stand and fight to protect not only our children but all of the children in New York State by starting grassroots efforts to get rid of the entire failed Common Core agenda. Yvonne is so deserving of the honor of being asked by gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino to speak at the New York State 2014 Republican Convention AND she did an amazing job!
I will be supporting candidates in November who are standing with parents against Common Core and that includes Rob Astorino for Governor of New York State.
